Despite seeing less and less MALDI in the literature these days, it's still cool technology! It's seriously hard to beat the speed and ease of use -- but...yeah...the spectra can be seriously noisy without any separation....
This new paper takes a swing at that problem with a new automated background subtraction methodology!
Now...there is a lot of maths in this paper and I'm not the best person to evaluate those, but the approach they're taking is one they says is commonly used in imaging technologies for noise reduction and that makes a lot of sense to me!
The paper goes like this -- ugly spectra -- maths --maths -- nicer spectra! And it's hard to argue with that!
